Is TMC Looking For An Alliance With Congress Before 2019 Lok Sabha Elections?

The fluctuating opportunist policy of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee isn’t a surprise for anyone. Previously she has gone for an alliance with NDA in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee era and later alligned with the Congress to reap benefits of being a powerhouse in the national capital.

No doubt, in historic Assembly Elections of 2011, when the CPM was dethroned by TMC, Congress ably supported Mamata Banerjee’s political dream of becoming chief minister of the state. This time around, with Rajya Sabha election, Mamata Banerjee has already preferred her choices in the state. West Bengal is scheduled to send five members to the Rajya Sabha and numerically TMC can send four members with their own support.

Regarding the fifth one, the CPM was in fray, while looking to identify a consensus candidate. TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee is well aware of the political ambitions of BJP and doesn’t consider CPM to be a direct threat to the existence of BJP. Side by side she is also well aware that TMC supporting CPM will definitely send a bad example to the party members and followers.

From such a perspective, she has decided that TMC won’t support CPM candidate Rabin Deb, a veteran leader who was competed against Mamata Banerjee in a losing case. Interestingly, Congress has fielded Abhishek Manu Sanghvi, veteran Congress leader, close to Sonia Gandhi. This has sparked a new polotical debate – is TMC going to take an offensive stand against BJP with Congress help?

There is no denying the fact that TMC is expected to win more than thirty seats in Lok Sabha next year. In spite of the fact that BJP has increased its base by leaps and bounds, they are not in a position to dethrone TMC even if there is a Modi wave. Mamata Banerjee certainly has potential ambitions in the national front. She has a keen desire to be the prime minister of India, which seems impossible by all means. Overall, Mamata Banerjee is looking forward to becoming the game changer in National politics and the candidature of Abhishek Manu Sanghvi from Bengal is a first instance of that.
